AFHny Studio is seeking volunteers to help with an ArtFarm build weekend this Saturday and Sunday, June 26 & 27.
Work on site will include finishing assembly of components, affixing boxes to the site, and planting. The work Sunday will be in conjunction with a family event at the nearby Bronx Museum of the Arts.

Architecture for Humanity and The Salvation Army join the U.S. Green Building Council this year in hosting USGBC's 2010 Natural Talent Design Competition. Entrants will design an affordable, 800 square foot green home for an elderly client in the Broadmoor, New Orleans neighborhood. Winners will be announced after the top four entries have been constructed, inhabited and evaluated.

On January 12th a powerful 7.0 earthquake, followed more than 30 strong aftershocks, hit the impoverished nation of Haiti. There has been widespread major damage and loss of life.

Last August we selected a board of nine new directors to lead the organization. Directors serve staggered two-year terms, with half the positions up for re-election each summer. Four of our current directors are stepping down, and others moving into new roles, and so we are now seeking applicants to fill the vacancies.

Organized by City Year, Community Service Days are designed to bring people together and be sustainable and transformative, making a visible difference in one day. Volunteers start the day with a morning opening program, then complete several hours of service on a a team lead by City Year, finishing by the late afternoon. Typical work may include landscaping a community garden, mural painting in a local public school, or building bookshelves.

Architecture for Humanity New York has been very busy over the past few years. We've recently completed work on a clinic in Morningside Heights for Care for the Homeless. We are continuing our work at The Point and at High Bridge Park. And we are starting new projects, including work with the Red Hook vendors, and a new health clinic at Washington Irving High School with the Institute for Urban Family Health.
We have also redesigned our organizational structure, expanding our leadership to nine directors, to keep our projects running smoothly, ensure that we continue to offer challenging and exciting opportunities to our volunteers, and deliver excellent work to our clients and partner organizations.

This year, Architecture for Humanity New York is focusing much of its work on the issues of housing within the five boroughs of New York City. From the topics of homelessness to the issues facing the middle class, the topic of housing touches the life of every citizen in this city. As such, AFHny is interested in hearing what housing-related topics, issues, and projects our volunteers would like to work on or are currently pursuing.
