Parsons Highbridge Class

Project Coordinator: Jabari Garland

The Highbridge Class is a collaboration between AFHny and the Parsons Pre-Enrollment Scholars Program. The program offers preparatory courses to high school students in art and design. Consisting of about 20 students, the class will be in the final semester of the program in Spring 2009, and meet every Saturday for 11-weeks starting February 7th. Nick Brinen, a professor at Parsons, will teach while AFHny volunteers will assist Nick and the students in and outside the classroom as needed. The class will be an introduction to Architectural design based on a renovation of the Highbridge Gatehouses in Bronx, New York. We will also invite guest lecturers to share their expertise as it relates to the course.

The students' design proposal for the Highbridge will be presented to the NYC Parks Department at the end of the semester. Our goal for this project is to give students the opportunity to work with professionals on a community based project. By focusing on a real world project like the Highbridge they get to see first-hand how the tools of design can improve their environment.
