Working Meeting - Tue, Jul 7, 2009 at 7:00 PM

Are you interested in learning more about our organization, our projects and volunteer opportunities? Our monthly Working Meetings are for discussing current work and meeting prospective volunteers. These meetings are usually followed by informal conversation over drinks at a local pub.

Deadline extended for AFHny-Habitat Design Charrette

AFHny-Habitat Design Charrette

Announcing a (very) short design charrette to kick off our collaboration with Habitat for Humanity New York.

AFHny is partnering with Habitat NYC to design and build outdoor furniture and play equipment for a Habitat project in Ocean Hill-Brownsville, Brooklyn.

5/8/09 STUDIO Hours Canceled

STUDIO hours on May 8th are canceled, as the coordinators are previewing a potential permanent workspace for the STUDIO.

Firms needed for SCA Summer Internship Program

The New York City School Construction Authority is seeking architectural and engineering firms to participate in their Summer Internship Program. This six-week program offers talented NYC public high school students an opportunity to work for architectural, construction management and engineering firms (at no cost to firms), and provides career development workshops to help the students develop academically, professionally and personally.

City Year Community Service Days

Organized by City Year, Community Service Days are designed to bring people together and be sustainable and transformative, making a visible difference in one day. Volunteers start the day with a morning opening program, then complete several hours of service on a a team lead by City Year, finishing by the late afternoon. Typical work may include landscaping a community garden, mural painting in a local public school, or building bookshelves.

Volunteers needed for FlyNY

FlyNY is an international kite design competition to benefit AFHny. The competition and kite flying event will be May 9th at Pier 1 (Riverside Park), with a design exhibition and auction to follow on May 28th.

2009 Open Architecture Challenge: Classroom

This Friday, September 19th, from 7:00am to 7:00pm, we will take over a parking spot on Madison Avenue between 73rd & 74th (one block south of the Whitney Museum). Our parking spot will be transformed for the day into an outdoor art studio/workshop, to let New Yorkers contemplate the people, architecture, energy and refuse of the city around them.

New Directors Selected

Architecture for Humanity New York has been very busy over the past few years. We've recently completed work on a clinic in Morningside Heights for Care for the Homeless. We are continuing our work at The Point and at High Bridge Park. And we are starting new projects, including work with the Red Hook vendors, and a new health clinic at Washington Irving High School with the Institute for Urban Family Health.

We have also redesigned our organizational structure, expanding our leadership to nine directors, to keep our projects running smoothly, ensure that we continue to offer challenging and exciting opportunities to our volunteers, and deliver excellent work to our clients and partner organizations.
